Patriots win one of four in Campbellsville University Classic

The Patriots played four games last weekend at the Campbellsville University Classic. After losing the opening game on Friday to #15 Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) 8-1 the Patriots bounced back with an 8-7 win over Madonna University (Mich.) a team that received votes in the national top 25 poll. On Saturday they fell 8-1 to Davenport (Mich.) and then dropped an 8-6 decision to Calumet College (Ind.).

One bright spot throughout last week was the performance of leadoff hitter Kasie Prather (Lancaster, Ky.) The senior center fielder from Lancaster, Ky. hit .586 (17-29) for the week that included four doubles, one triple and two home runs. Prather took a 10 game hitting streak into yesterday’s game against Shawnee State.

In the 8-7 victory over Madonna University (12-9), Prather was 3-5 with two runs scored. Taylor Steff (Louisville, Ky.) and  Krystal Cammuse (Frankfort, Ky.) had two hits each as the Patriot’s bats came alive with 12 hits. Cammuse was the winning pitcher as she went the distance, allowing nine hits with six strikeouts. Madonna had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with one out but Cammuse got a ground out and a pop up to end the game.

In the other three games of the Campbellsville Classic the Patriots, now 9-17, managed just a total of 11 hits. They were limited to three hits against Olivet Nazarene and two against Davenport. Prather had two of the six hits against Calumet and Amber Matteoli (Union, Ky.) homered in the game.

The Patriots return to Mid-South Conference play Tuesday with a doubleheader against visiting Shawnee State University starting at 3:00. On Saturday they travel to West Virginia Tech for a non-conference doubleheader.
