Patriot softball drops two to Bears

In Mid-South Conference softball played Tuesday at Salt River Electric Field the visiting Shawnee State Bears swept a doubleheader from the St. Catharine College Patriots. The bears pounded out 31 hits in the two games, winning 8-6 in the opener and 11-3 in the nightcap.

Shawnee State (12-2, 4-0) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of game one and never trailed. They led 8-2 entering the Patriots’ final at-bat and then held on as Holly Smith’s team mounted a rally that came up just short.

Shawnee State did most of their damage in two innings as they plated four more runs in the fifth after the three-run second frame. Those big innings came against starter Krystal Cammuse who went the distance for the Patriots. Cammuse allowed nine hits, walked eight and struck out eight.

St. Catharine (9-19, 0-10) outhit the Bears as they slugged out 13 knocks. Chelcie Rein had three hits. Amber Matteoli, Kasie Prather and Taylor Steff had two hits each. One of Prather’s hits was a home run.

In the second game the Bears exploded for six runs in the sixth inning that extended their lead to 10-3. Ashley Cardenas took the loss, allowing 10 runs on 21 hits through six innings. Cammuse worked the last inning and allowed one run on one hit.

Hagan Goldey had four of the Patriots’ 11 hits. Prather had three hits including another homer.

The Patriots’ next doubleheader is at West Virginia tech on Saturday. They are back to Mid-South Conference action next Tuesday with  a twin bill at Campbellsville.
