SC track teams continue to make strides in competition

The men’s and women’s track teams at St. Catharine College continue to make strides toward respectability against teams that have completed in the sport for decades. Those strides may be small for Blake Jones’ program, in just its second year, but he sees improvement each time out for his runners.

Jones noted such improvement on Saturday when his teams competed at the Centre College Invitational in Danville. “There were quite a few good teams there and we weren’t able to beat any of them. But nearly every person who participated for us had a personal best.

The eight team meet was easily won by Eastern Kentucky University on both the men’s and women’s side. The St. Catharine women had 14 points while the men had 7.5.

Junior Symfonee Henderson earned six of the points for the Patriot women with a third place finish in the high jump at four feet, nine and three-quarter inches. Michelle Dunaway finished fifth in the long jump to get four points with a leap of 16’1”. Leslie Collins got two points for a seventh place finish in the discus throw (101’, 3”). Allie Southard finished eighth in the high jump for one point and Lindsey Vinson got one point for the eight place finish in the javelin throw.

In the men’s meet, Troy Mattingly cleared 5’11.5” inches in the high jump for a fifth place finish and four points. Travis Wilkins picked up one-half a point in the high jump as he tied for eighth. Mattingly earned the final three points with a sixth place finish in the 110 meter hurdles.

The Patriots are back on the track Saturday at the University of the Cumberlands Invitational in Williamsburg, Ky.
