14 Innings Needed to Get Game 1 of Fall World Series

The Patriot Baseball Club started their Fall World Series in record fashion, with a fourteen inning, four hour and forty five minute marathon that was won 5-4 by Team Davis. Both teams had several opportunities to plate runs, but quality pitching and solid defense highlighted game 1 of the FWS.

Shawn Thompson scored the winning run on a sac fly by Neal Straton. Thompson led off the bottom of the 14th with a single, then stole second and third base to set up the Straton run scoring fly out. Thompson added a game tying squeeze bunt in the bottom of the 9th that knoted the game 4-4 and sent game one to extra innings. Kyle Leja picked up the win in relief and Brian Jones suffered the loss.

Team Davis out hit Team Allen 15-9 and was led at the plate by Shawn Thompson who went 3-5 with a RBI, run and 5 swipes. Adam Blair went 3-6 with a double, run and 2 stolen bases. Alan Stoupa had 2 doubles, Jeremy Turpin singled and doubled and Daniel Bentley added 2 singles. Kaleb Henry had a 3 run bomb to left field in the third inning to give Team Davis a short lived lead.

Team Allen was led by Josh Landers, who tripled and doubled while going 3-7 with a rbi and scored 2 runs. Jared Yates had two hits, with a double, run and stolen base. Brian Jones added an rbi single and Jacob Brown had a rbi single in the eighth on a 12 pitch at bat.

Joel Brockman started for Team Davis, tossing 4 plus innings. He allowed 2 runs on four hits, while walking 3 and hitting 2. Lee Thompson tossed 3 innings, giving up 1 run on 1 hit. He walked 4, but had 5 punch outs. Brad Krohman pitched 5.1 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits and had 2 walks and 3 K's. Leja hurled the final 1.2 innings, allowing 1 hit and 2 walks.

For Team Allen, Nick Holmes started and tossed the first 4 innings. He gave up 3 runs on the Henry homer, 5 hits with 3 K's and 3 walks. Jeff Strong hurled 4 innings with no runs on 5 hits. He walked 1 and had 5 punch outs. Brian Jones tossed 5 plus innings, surrendering 2 runs on 5 hits. He had 5 K's and 3 walks. Matt Wagner pitched .1 inning getting the sac fly out in the bottom of the 14th.

Game 2 of the best of three series is Wednesday at 3:15 with Team Allen needing to force a game three. The losing team will have to perform a talent show for the SCC student body.
