Patriot baseball welcomes new pitching coach

Luther Bramblett, head coach of St. Catharine College baseball for 11 years has spent the last four seasons trying to fill an important void – that of a pitching coach. But the Bat Pats’ skipper needs to look no more as of Thursday. That is when the newest member of the St. Catharine staff came on board as Matt Hockstatter signed on to be the coach of the mound corps.

“Obviously you have to have guys on the mound who can win games for you,” Bramblett said. “And now we won’t have another one of our coaches who has to split time between the pitchers and hitters or defense.”

Hockstatter is a native of Somonauk, Illinois who pitched for Illinois Valley Community College and then for Wisconsin-Whitewater, a NCAA Division III school. He is currently coaching the Fulton (Ky.) Railroaders in the Ohio Valley Collegiate League. That is where his connection to St. Catharine began.

“Two pitchers, Cory Klinger and Cody Alvey, from St. Catharine are playing for us this summer in Fulton and we started talking about their college team,” explained Hockstatter. “I called Coach Bramblett about the position and it led to this. I am excited about the opportunity.”

As is Bramblett. “Matt has done a real good job with the Railroaders and our guys had good things to say about him. They have improved their mechanics and velocity with him. He’s young, enthusiastic and has a plan.”

Hockstatter, who received his Bachelor’s Degree in Entrepreneurship, said he will work on his Master’s Degree at St. Catharine.
