Blue Raiders Blast Patriots 8-1 in Season Opener

If anyone doubted that the Lindsey Wilson soccer team was a legitimate number one team in the nation, it didn’t take long for them to become believers last Saturday at the Barber Soccer Field at St. Catharine College. The Blue Raiders, defending national champions who now own a 25 game winning streak scored three goals in the first 11 minutes en rout to an 8-1 win over the Patriots (0-1).

Lindsey Wilson got the first two goals of the game in the seventh minutes as they dominated play early. They added four more goals in the first half to take a 6-0 lead at intermission. Patriot goalkeeper C.J. Powell did record five saves in the first period as the Blue Raiders fired 11 shots on goal among their 14 total shots.

St. Catharine scored its only goal 10 minutes into the second half when Ashley Woods found the net from 15 yards out on an assist from Isaac Blanford. Lindsey Wilson scored again

11 minutes later and then completed the onslaught with 20 minutes to play for the final 8-1 score.

The Patriots had just four shots for the game and only two on goal. The Blue Raiders had 18 total shots, 15 of them on goal. Powell recorded six saves for St. Catharine.

“We got off to a slow start that doomed us,” said Patriot head coach Tim Wolz. “But they are number one for a reason. They have a very good team.”
