Baseball Swept In Season Opening Series

The St. Catharine College Patriots were swept in their last minute season opening series by Harris-Stowe State College at Freed-Hardeman University last weekend. SCC never led in all three games losing by the scores (4-2), (7-1) and (2-0), falling to 0-3 for the first time since 2002.

"I thought we competed," Patriot Coach Luther Bramblett stated. "We just didn't hit and if you don't hit - you usually don't win. I thought we pitched well enough to win atleast two, if not all three games. We had three quality starts from our starters. Not making excuses, but the weather has greatly limited our ability to see any live pitching or BP and that really hurt us I think; they also tossed some pretty good arms at us."

Travis Adams (0-1) started game one for the Patriots. He tossed 4.1 innings, giving up 4 runs - 3 earned, 4 hits and had 6 K's. Tim Paxton hurled 1.2 innings with 2 K's and allowed 2 base knocks. Brian Jones went 2-4 with a run and a double. Kaleb Henry doubled and scored and Philip Dean added a single and a stolen base. The Patriots had bases loaded with no outs in the seventh and failed to score to end the game.

Nick Holmes (0-1) toed the rubber in game two. He threw 4.1 innings, allowing 2 runs - 1 earned and had 4 K's. Adam Gillcrist threw 2 innings, giving up 5 runs - 3 earned. Brad Krohman and Lee Thompson both earned outs in their action. The Patriots were no hit through the first 5 innings until Justin Witt singled up the middle. He stole second and scored on a Brian Jones RBI single for the only bright note on the offensive side.

Joel Brockman (0-1) had the best start on the weekend for the Patriots. He threw 5.2 innings with 4 K's and only 1 BB. He allowed 2 runs - 1 earned, scattering 4 hits. Brian Jones tossed 1.1 innings in relief and had 2 K's. Adam Blair went 2-3. Chris Smith, Kaleb Henry and Philip Dean all singled for the Bat Pats. They had runners in scoring position in the second, fifth and seventh innings while leaving 6 runners on base.

The Patriots (0-3) are scheduled to play in Nashville this Wednesday against pre-season ranked Trevecca University at 2:00.
