Patriot volleyball wins home opener over Midway; wins in Texas

The St. Catharine College volleyball team enjoyed its home opener Tuesday against Midway College. And the Patriots weren’t very congenial hosts as they sent the Eagles flying back home with a 3-0 loss. Then, far from home on Thursday, St. Catharine improved to 3-5 for the season with a hard fought 3-2 win in Houston against Trinity International University.

Midway, playing in its first match of the season, battled the Patriots in the first set before losing 27-25. St. Catharine had an easier time in the next two sets, winning 25-11, 25-16.

Allie Southard led the Patriots with a .348 hitting percentage as the sophomore from Louisville had 10 kills in 23 attempts. Casey Stone, a sophomore from Princeton, Ky.,  had 11 kills and hit .217. Chelsea Wichman, a freshman from Clayton, Ind., had 16 digs.

The Patriots overcame a long plane trip to Houston on Thursday and came away with the win over Trinity International in the first of five matches to be played in the University of St. Thomas tournament.

The team split the first two sets, the Trojans (0-5) taking the first one 25-23 and the patriots winning the second set 25-20. The Trojans won the fourth set 25-20 but St. Catharine stayed alive with a 25-17 win the fourth set. They then won the fifth set 15-13.

Stone and Southard against led the patriots with 18 and 14 kills respectively. Randa Murphy, a junior from Greensburg, Ky., 3e7 digs while sophomore Lauren Bowling (Florence, Ky.) had 27 digs. 1

“We didn’t play our best but we did come out with a win,” said Patriots’ coach Adam Stevenson.

After four more matches in Houston over the Labor Day weekend, the Patriots will return home for their Mid-South Conference opener at home Wednesday against Georgetown starting at 7:00.
