Patriot women open soccer season 0-1-1

The St. Catharine College Women’s Soccer team traveled to Freed Hardeman in Henderson, Tennessee over Labor Day weekend in hopes of beating tropical storm Isaac while getting in two games. The Patriots did weather the storm, encountering no weather problems, but couldn’t come away with a win over the host Lions or the Louisiana College Wildcats.

Against Louisiana College, 1-1, the Patriots fell 2-0. The Wildcats scored in the 30th minute and that lead held until the final minutes. “We put in an extra forward late to try to create more offense,” said Partiot Coach Paul Patton, “and they got a breakaway goal with less than three minutes left. We were down 1-0 and I figured we needed to be aggressive and score because it doesn’t matter if you lose 1-0 or 2-0.”  The Patriots had nine shots for the game, four on goal, while the Wildcats got off seven shots, five of them on goal.

In Sunday’s contest against freed Hardeman it looked like the Patriots would claim a victory to even their record. After a scoreless first half, Paola Martinez scored in the 58th minute to give St. Catharine a 1-0 lead.  But with just 34 seconds left to play, Brittny Johnson scored for the Lions (1-1-2) when she fired a shot in the upper right hand corner past goalkeeper Lindsey Vinson. Vinson, who had five saves for the game, had kept the Lions scoreless with a diving save in the 75th minute. Neither team was able to mount a serious threat in either of the two, 10-minute overtime periods as match ended in a 1-1 deadlock.

The Patriots return to play Thursday at home against Midway College. That game starts at 4:00.
