Patriot Women Beat MSC Foe, Shawnee State

Victory is first ever versus the Bears.

In a match affected as much by the weather as by the quality of play, the Patriot Women defeated the visiting Shawnee State University Bears by a 2-0 score yesterday.

With a strong wind from the West affecting play, St. Catharine and Shawnee State resumed a heated rivalry that saw a see-saw battle, a red card, and some controversial officiating last season.  The 2012 version of the match-up, played on the new grass at the Barber Soccer Complex was a bit less heated, but an exciting contest throughout.

In the first half, the Bears won the coin toss and took the wind at their backs.  The strong wind made it difficult at best for the Patriots to put the ball in the air, and the result was a turnover plagued half that was a hard fought defensive struggle for both squads.  Neither team was able to solve their opponents defense, and the result was a 0-0 half-time score.

With the wind at their backs, the second half was a different story for the Patriots as they were able to force 4 corner kicks and 8 shots in the period.  Mid-way through the half, Patriot junior Paola Martinez sent a corner kick into the box for Paige Long to slot into the Shawnee net in what would become the game winner.  The insurance goal came with 10 minutes to go, as Krista Russell scored her second goal of the season and the 42nd of her career off a rebound from a Sara Herbert shot.

The Patriots outshot the Bears 16 - 7 for the game with 9 on goal to the Bears 3.  Lindsey Vinson made three saves in goal for the Patriots to earn her second shutout of the season.

The win gives the Patriots a 3-2-2 record on the season and a 1-1-0 record in the Mid South Conference.  The Patriots will be in action again this Wednesday, September 26th in a 3:00 pm home match versus MSC opponent, University of Rio Grande.
