The men’s soccer team recovered from a tough loss at Trevecca Nazarene earlier in the week by beating the visiting Shawnee State Bears in a Mid-South Conference match Saturday. The Patriots notched a 3-0 win over the visiting Bears (1-7, 1-2).

Marvin Wesselburg, a freshman from Essen Germany, got St. Catharine on the board with nine minutes to play in the first half when he scored from five yards out with assists credited to Ben Nally and Ashley Woods.

That 1-0 lead stood until the 67th minute when Isaac Blanford took an assist from Sam Kpoh and found the net from 13 yards out. Woods completed the scoring in the 76th minute off an assist from Blanford.

Shawnee State was able to just get two shots on goal for the game as C.J. Powell posted the shutout. The Patriots, now 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference, had six shots on goal and outshot the Bears 15-6 overall.

The Patriots now turn their attention to Wednesday’s contest against the University of Rio Grande. The Red Storm will visit Barber Field for a 5:00 kick-off, bringing with them a 7-1 overall record and a 3-0 conference mark. They are ranked second in the nation and have won seven consecutive games. The only loss for the Red storm was a 1-0 setback to #25 Saint Xavier University in the first game of the season.
