Patriot Women Calm RedStorm 2-1

The St. Catharine women scored two goals within a three minute span in Wednesday’s game against visiting University of Rio Grande.  The Patriots made that stand up for a 2-1 Mid-South Conference win over the RedStorm.

“I don’t think we played our best game, but we were aggessive and we found a way to win,” said SC coach Paul Patton.  “And any win in this conference is a good one.”  The St. Catharine victory improved the Patriots’ record to 4-2-2 overall and 2-1 in the MSC.  The RedStorm fell to 4-6 and 1-2.

Macy Higdon, a freshman from Elizabethtown, Kentucky, got the patriots on the board with a breakaway goal from 10 yards out that came off a long ball from Adrienne Bishop late in the first half.  Then 2:51 later Sarah Castillo pounced on a Patriot shot that hit the crossbar and found the net from point blank range.

That 2-0 lead stood until Rio’s Kasey Crow scored from 10 yards out just six minutes into the second half.  That is where the scoring ended as both defenses stiffened for the remainder of the match.

The RedStorm had just six total shots and only three on goal as SC goalkeeper Lindsey Vinson had two saves, both in the first half. The Patriots took 17 total shots with 13 on goal but Rio goalkeeper Allison Keeney turned away 11 of those.

The Patriots face another Mid-South Conference opponent Saturday when they travel to Pikeville.
