Patriot men fall to Cumberlands in tough battle

The final score will read 3-1 after the visiting University of the Cumberlands beat the St. Catharine men in Mid-South Conference soccer Wednesday. But while that may appear to be an easy victory for the visitors, who received votes in the NAIA top 25 poll, it was a much closer match.

Much, much closer that is. With 1:21 to play in the game St. Catharine trailed 2-1 and had a corner kick from Ashley Woods. Woods’ kick sailed directly in front of the goal where Jeffrey Warren headed the ball that just missed landing in the right side of the net. Cumberlands then scored with 35 seconds left in the game, the third goal by Daniel Ferreira.

St. Catharine managed just two shots on goal, one of which found the net when Rex Catron scored to tie the game 1-1 in the 18th minute. Ferreira put Cumberlands ahead 2-1in the 75th minute and then added his final goal in the closing seconds.

Cumberlands (7-2-1, 4-2) had eight shots on goal and SC goalkeeper C.J. Powell had five saves.

The Patriots, now 6-8 overall and 2-4 in the Mid-South Conference, are back in conference play Saturday when they travel to Virginia to take on Bluefield College. St. Catharine is currently in seventh place in the conference, one-half game behind Bluefield and Shawnee
