Women Win Again in Conference Soccer

Since joining the Mid-South Conference in 2008, the SC women’s soccer has never won more than two games in conference play. But with the 5-1 victory Wednesday over visiting university of the Cumberlands Paul Patton’s team now owns a 4-2 conference mark and a 7-3-2 overall record.

The win over Cumberlands (2-9, 0-6) was the first ever for the Patriot Women's Soccer program and put the Patriots in fourth place in the MSC, one-half game ahead of fifth place Campbellsville and one-half game behind third place Georgetown. The Patriots play conference foe Bluefield College in Virginia on Saturday. Bluefield is 6-6 overall and 2-3 in the MSC.

The Patriots wasted little time in taking control Wednesday over Cumberlands as Paola Martinez scored 12 seconds into the game after Sara Herbert picked off a pass near midfield and gave a pass to Martinez who raced in for the goal. Martinez scored again four minutes later to give St. Catharine a 2-0 lead.  Krista Russell scored off an assist from Kelsey Pendleton in the 17th minute and Macy Higdon dished an assist to Sarah Castillo who made the score 4-0 just two minutes before halftime.

Paige Long’s second half goal, off an assist from Herbert, gave the Patriots a 5-0 lead in the 78th minute. Toni Dempsey then scored for Cumberlands with three minutes left in the game for the final 5-1 decision.  SC goalkeeper Maggie Grieser had four saves for the game. Cumberlands had nine total shots with five on goal. The Patriots launched 18 shots overall with 10 on goal.
