Patriots Grab “Must-Win" Game at Georgetown

The men’s soccer team will live to play another day. That came to fruition Wednesday night when Tim Wolz’s Patriots blanked Georgetown 4-0 on the Tigers’ home field. The victory assures St. Catharine a place in the eight team field of the Mid-South Conference tournament that starts November 3rd.

“We played as well as we have all year,” said Wolz whose team improved to 7-10 overall and 3-6 in the MSC. “Everybody on the field was very good including the substitutes we used.”

Just 1:58 into the game Marvin Wesselburg gave St. Catharine all the offense they would need with a goal assisted by Jeffrey Warren. The 1-0 score would hold up until Sawyer Abshire scored off a Wesselburg assist in the 64th minute.

Just four minutes later another goal by Wesselburg made the score 3-0 and Ashley Woods’ goal with three minutes left in the game completed the scoring.

The Tigers (3-13, 2-7), who were eliminated from post-season play with the loss, managed just one shot on goal during the game as SC goalkeeper C.J. Powell posted the shutout. The Patriots had seven shots on goal and 11 overall.

“It was a great atmosphere,” added Wolz. “We had a good crowd show up for us.”

Now The Patriots wait and see where the post-season will take them. That depends on the outcome of Shawnee State’s game Saturday at Cumberland. If Shawnee State wins they will claim seventh place and the Patriots will head to Rio Grande, ranked No. 1 nationally, for a quarterfinal game. If Shawnee state loses Saturday the Patriots will play their quarterfinal game at No. 2 Lindsey Wilson.

Following the November 3rd quarterfinals, the semifinals and finals of the Mid-South Conference tournament will be played at Lindsey Wilson November 7th and 8th.
