SC Women Take First Loss at Bluefield

Just 12 seconds into Saturday’s game when the Patriot women traveled to Bluefield College, Monique Robson hit a foul shot to give the host Rams a 1-0 lead. It was a lead they would never relinquish as they handed St. Catharine a 64-50 loss in the Patriots’ Mid-South Conference opener.

Bluefield (6-0, 2-0) had beaten the Georgetown Tigers in their conference opener and looked more like a conference favorite instead of a last place team as the pre-season poll picked them. The Rams built the lead to 35-23 at halftime and led by as many as 21 points twice in the second half before settling for the 14 point victory.

St. Catharine (3-1, 0-1) shot 34 percent from the field (18-53) including 2-15 from three point range. Bluefield hit 39 percent (26-66) from the field and made four of 13 three point attempts. The Patriots were 12-15 at the foul line and the Rams were 8-13 at the charity stripe.

Reilly Poirier led the Patriots in scoring with 14 points and also grabbed a game high 10 rebounds. Machera Calhoun was 4-4 from the field and 5-7 on free throws for 13 points.

Robson led the Rams with 18 points and Teqa McNeal, the Mid-South Conference Player of the Week, added 14 points after scoring 32 in the earlier win over Georgetown.

Next up for the Patriots is the Georgetown team that was ranked sixth nationally in the NAIA pre-season poll. The Tigers will bring a 2-1 record into Lourdes Hall for Tuesday’s 6:00 contest that will be followed by the Patriot men against Georgetown.
