Patriots Fall to Tigers 90-80

Sometimes the intricacies of the game seem to make basketball quite complicated. But after his team’s 90-80 loss Tuesday to visiting Georgetown College, St. Catharine coach J.T. Burton explained the setback very simply.

“The bottom line is that they killed us inside,” said Burton after his team fell to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the Mid-South Conference. “We are playing guys in there many more minutes than we had planned going into the season. But until we get our big guys back (at the Christmas break) that is what we have to deal with.”

On Tuesday the Patriots had to deal with the Tigers’ inside game of Vic Moses and Deondre McWhorter who combined for 43 points. And they were quite efficient as Moses made 12 0f 14 field goal attempts in his game high 24 point performance and McWhorter was 7-13 in scoring 19 points.

But even with the disadvantage inside, the Patriots played nearly even much of the game with the nationally third ranked Tigers who improved to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. After trailing 39-34 at the break the Patriots found themselves down just three points when Marquis Lee hit a pair of three throws three minutes into the second half.

The Patriots would never get closer than that three point deficit, however, as Georgetown pushed the lead to as many as 16 points before claiming the final 10 point victory.

Lee led St. Catharine with 22 points and was one of four Patriots in double figures. Omar Skinner had 19, Kevin Kornegay 16 and DeShawn Mitchell 11. The Patriots shot a respectable 45 percent from the field but allowed the Tigers to shoot 56 percent.

“That is what makes them tough, they don’t take bad shots,” added Burton.

Despite the strength inside, Georgetown held just a 39-32 edge in rebounding. Skinner led the work on the boards with 10 rebounds while Terrance Smotherman and Mitchell had six each.

The Patriots are back in action Saturday at home for a non-conference game against Virginia Intermont starting at 4:00.
