Patriots Cave to Cavalier's Second Half Surge

When Dominique Roy scored the first basket of the second half, the lead for St. Catharine stood at 42-31 and it looked like J.T. Burton’s bunch could get a much needed road win Saturday at UVA-Wise. But the Cavaliers then embarked on a 21-5 run en route to claiming the 68-61 victory.

St. Catharine (6-10, 2-8) did regain the lead briefly at 54-52 with 9:38 remaining. But UVA-Wise (9-5, 5-4) got a trey from Javon Moore 47 seconds later and never trailed again.

St. Catharine was able to take the 40-31 halftime lead thanks to 46 percent shooting but faltered in the second half with just 30 percent from the field. That still was much better than the Cavaliers who ended the game at 31 percent from the field. The home team, however, held a 52-36 rebounding edge. And the Cavaliers also sank 12 more free throws as they were 19-29 at the foul line while the Patriots were 7-9.

Moore led all scorers with 22 points and also had 11 rebounds. Arthur McMillan paced the Patriots with 12 points and Omar Skinner added 11.

The loss dropped the Patriots into a last place tie with Bluefield in the Mid-South Conference at 2-8. This week St. Catharine faces two more conference games on the road. Thursday they visit Rio Grande and Saturday they are at Shawnee State.
