Patriots Overcome RedStorm to Win 88-77

While many were concerned with Thursday’s impending ice storm outside, Lena Bramblett was more concerned with the RedStorm inside as her Patriots fell behind by three points at halftime at Rio Grande. But St. Catharine weathered the storm in pulling away to an 88-77 Mid-South Conference victory.

After falling by six points early in the second half, the Patriots (13-5, 7-4) used a 10-2 run to lead 52-50 six minutes into the second half. Then, with the score 54-51, St. Catharine embarked on a 13-1 run and the RedStorm never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

The victory kept the Patriots in fourth place in the conference, one game behind third place Georgetown and three games in back of conference leader Cumberland University. Rio Grande fell to 6-14 overall and 0-11 in the MSC.

Senior forward Janae Howard had a season high 30 points and added 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Reilly Poirier, another senior forward, recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Heather Sandlin had a career high 18 points.

The RedStorm shot 37.5 percent from the field while St. Catharine hit 48.5 percent, including 7-14 from three point range. Rio Grande was 20-28 at the foul line and the Patriots were 15-22.

Another huge game now looms for the Patriots as they travel to Shawnee State for a 2:00 game on Saturday. In the earlier meeting between the two teams the Patriots nipped the Bears 80-78 on a last second shot in overtime.  Shawnee State is currently ranked 19th in the nation and is one game behind the Patriots in the conference standings.
