Patriot Comeback Falls Short at Shawnee State

After leading by one point at the half, St. Catharine fell behind by as much as 15 points in Saturday’s game at Shawnee State. The Patriots did bounce back to cut that deficit to five points in the closing minutes but couldn’t sustain the comeback in dropping a 75-63 decision to the Bears in Mid-South Conference action.

The Patriots (13-6, 7-5) overcame a nine point first half deficit to lead 30-29 at intermission. But # 19 Shawnee State (16-6, 7-5) took the lead for good at 39-36 with 17:37 to play on a three pointer by Desirai Smith. They built that lead to 68-53 with 4:37 left but the Patriots mounted a 10-0 run and trailed by five points with 2:09 left. The Bears, however, scored the game’s final eight points of the game.

“We played hard and better defense than we did in the win on Thursday (Rio Grande) but things just didn’t go our way down the stretch,” said Bramblett.

Things went Janae Howard’s way as the Patriot senior recorded her second consecutive double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Reilly Poirier added 14 points and nine boards. Point guard Machera Calhoun had eight rebounds as the teams tied in rebounds at 43 apiece.

Both teams were proficient at the foul line as the Bears sank 15 of 18 and the patriots were 14-16. Shawnee state was much better from the field at 44 percent, including 6-12 from 3-point range, while the Patriots shot just 32 percent and were 3-15 from behind the arc.

It is now back to the friendly confines of Lourdes Hall for the Patriots as they host two Mid-South Conference games this week. Thursday they play University of the Cumberlands at 6:00 and Saturday at 2:00 they host Cumberland University (Tenn.).

University of the Cumberlands (13-8, 6-6) is one game behind the Patriots in the conference standings. Cumberland University is seventh in the nation and owns a 20-1 overall record and a 11-1 ledger in the conference. That lone loss came against St. Catharine when the  Patriots won 57-55 January 3rd in Lebanon, Tennessee.
