Patriot Women Blitz Bears 93-64

The Patriots wasted little time in taking control of Saturday’s Mid-South Conference game against the visiting Bears from Pikeville. Lena Bramblett’s team took an 11-0 lead to start the game and never looked back in posting a 93-64 victory.

Two St. Catharine seniors were recognized before Saturday’s game and both were instrumental in the victory. Reilly Poirier reached a double-double with still seven minutes to play in the first half and ended the game with 18 points and 17 rebounds. Janae Howard added 17 points and six boards.

The two seniors had plenty of support from the underclassmen as Alexiss Griffin had 13 points while Rianne Hofstraat and Stacie Shrout had 12 points each. All of Shrout’s points came from long range as the sophomore guard was 4-8 from behind the arc.

After the initial onslaught, the Patriots pushed the lead to as many as 22 points in the first half before taking a 48-30 lead to the locker room. They enjoyed their biggest lead of 35 points (89-54) with 4:20 left to play.

St. Catharine held the Bears (8-16, 4-11) to 39.7 percent shooting from the field that included 4-19 (21 percent) on three point attempts. The Patriots connected on 48.5 percent overall and were 8-19 (42 percent0 from three point range.

A rebounding advantage of 55-22 for St. Catharine allowed them to score many second chance points as 20 of the rebounds came at the offensive end. In addition to Poirier’s strong work on the boards, Hofstraat had nine rebounds and Griffin had eight.

The Patriots return to action Monday with a non-conference game against Bethel College (Tenn.) who is ranked 16th in the latest NAIA poll. In November the Patriots won 73-68 at Bethel. The home finale for the Patriots is Thursday when they take on Bluefield College in a Mid-South Conference tilt.
