Patriots fall at Lindsey Wilson 76-63

The St. Catharine College Patriots took a seven game winning streak to Columbia on Thursday to play the Blue Raiders. But there is where the streak ended for J.T. Burton’s team as they fell 76-63 to the Mid-South Conference leader.

The setback left the Patriots (13-11, 9-9) in sixth place in the conference, one game behind Campbellsville which is where they play Saturday at 4:00 in a pivotal MSC match-up.  The regular season ends Monday when the Patriots visit third place Georgetown.

Thursday’s game looked like a toss-up when St. Catharine scored the first basket of the second half to cut the Blue Raiders’ lead to one point at 37-36. But Lindsey Wilson (25-3, 15-3) then went on a 15-4 run to take control of the game. The lead ballooned to 20 points before a late Patriots’ surge cut the margin to the final 13 points.

The glaring number on the stats page for St. Catharine was 27 which was how many turnovers they committed. The Blue Raiders turned those errors into 20 points. Lindsey Wilson’s 13 turnovers resulted in 14 St. Catharine points.

Travis Wilkins led a balanced St. Catharine scoring attack with 13 points. Will Tolefree had 12 while Arthur McMillan and Kevin Kornegay had 11 and 10 respectively. Wilkins and Tolefree each had nine rebounds as the patriots held a 47-33 edge on the boards.

Other than turnovers, most final statistics were fairly even. St. Catharine shot 41 percent from the field to the Blue Raiders’ 43.5 percent. The patriots were 6-18 on 3-point attempts while Lindsey Wilson was 9-23 from long range. St. Catharine was 53 percent (9-17) at the foul line and the Blue Raiders were 13-23 (56.5 percent).
