Junior Bruce Tolliver pitched a complete game shutout to clinch the Pats first MSC series.Bat Pats Streak Ends - But Win MSC Series
March 11, 2013The St. Catharine College Baseball squad saw their win streak end at 13 this weekend in their first Mid-South Conference series of the year against UVA-Wise. The Pats beat the Caveliers 10-9 on Saturday and split the DH on Sunday, losing 5-2 and winning the clincher 3-0.
In game 1, the Pats looked like they had the game in control, holding a 9-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. UVA-Wise plated 3 runs in the 7th and 4 runs in the 9th to make it interesting. Eddie Rivera (Anaheim, CA) picked up the win, tossing 6 innings - allowing 2 runs on 5 hits. He punched out 8, but issued 5 free bases. Cory Klinger (Rushylvania, OH) picked up the save with a K for the final out.
The Patriots were led by Eric Standafer (Shelbyville, KY) who had 2 knocks, a double and scored twice. KC Mejia (Vail, AZ) added 2 hits, a run and 2 stolen bases. 9 Patriots had base knocks in the game.
In the second game, the Caveliers jumped on Dylan Shoffner (Elizabethtown, KY) early, scoring a run in the 1st, 2nd and two runs in the 3rd innings. The freshman went 6 innings, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits and tallied 8 K's. Matt Wagner (Brooks, KY) kept the game close, tossing the final two frames and not allowing a run. Carlos Hernandez (Fresno, CA) knocked in Jeremy Turpin (Lawrenceburg, KY) who doubled in the 5th and Tyler Mischel (St. Louis, MO) homered in the 6th for the only 2 Patriot runs. The Pats left 12 runner on base. Hernandez went 3-4 with a double and RBI and Turpin went 2-4 with a double and run.
In the series clincher, Bruce Tolliver (Whittier, CA) tossed a complete game gem. He went 7 innings of shutout ball, scattering 4 hits. He punched out 8 Caveliers. Joel Cooper (Windsor, ON) led the Pats, with a 2-3 game. He doubled and tripled - had a RBI and scored two runs. Hernandez went 2-4 with 2 stolen bases and a run and Turpin scored a run after reqaching on a single.
The Patriots (15-7, 2-1 MSC) travel to Mid-Continent University on Tuesday and host MSC foe Bluefield College this weekend.
