Patriot Softball Knocks Down Spires in SweepMarch 13, 2013
The Patriots pounded out 22 hits in two games Tuesday while holding the University of St. Mary (Kan.) to just 10 in sweeping a twin bill from the visiting Spires at Salt River Electric Field.
“Their pitching was better than what I expected but we hit the ball well,” said SC coach Holly smith whose team evened its record at 6-6. “And they hit the ball but we made all the plays we should make.”
In the first game the Patriots scored six times in the first three innings and coasted to a 6-0 win. Chelcie Rein and Taylor Steff had two hits each in the Patriots’ eight hit attack. Rein’s two-run homer in the third inning gave the patriots the 6-0 lead.
Ashley Hardin tossed six innings in picking up the victory. The senior right-hander allowed seven hits, struck out three and walked none. Shelbi Thornhill allowed a hit in one scoreless inning of relief.
Game two ended with a 9-1 decision in six innings due to the run rule. Thornhill was the offensive star with three hits in four at-bats. The sophomore from Hardinsburg, Ky. had a double, home run and five RBI’s. Rein was 4-4 with a home run and Hagan Goldey had three hits including a double. Grace Mills was 2-2 with one RBI.
Brittany McKee went all six innings in the circle to pick up the victory. The freshman from Somerset, Ky. allowed just two hits, walked two and fanned five.
The Patriots will travel to Lindsey Wilson College on Thursday for a Mid-South Conference doubleheader against the Blue Raiders. Another conference doubleheader is on tap for Saturday at Bluefield College.
