Patriot Seniors Named Basketball All-Americans

For the first time since joining the NAIA four years ago, St. Catharine College has two basketball players named NAIA All-Americans. The honors went to seniors Janae Howard and Reilly Poirier.

Howard, who was named Honorable Mention All-American last year, made the second team All-American squad for the just completed 2012-2013 season. The Owensboro, Ky. native played with stress fractures in each leg that limited her to 23 games in the Patriots’ 31 game schedule.

Howard made the most of those 23 games as she was sixth in the nation in scoring with a 20.2 average. She ranked 10th nationally in blocked shots with two a game and was 39th in defensive rebounds with 5.4 a game. Her most productive outing this season was a 40 point game in a victory over Bethel College.

Poirier, from Dennis, Mass., was named third team All-American. The 5-11 forward was sixth in the nation in free throw percentage at 85 percent. She averaged 9.6 rebounds a game which was 14th nationally. Her 17 points a game was good for 23rd in the nation. Poirier shot 46 percent from the field and scored 35 points in a win over Asbury University.
