Patriots Ground Eagles in Doubleheader Sweep

The St. Catharine College nine got plenty of help from visiting Asbury University (10-27) on Thursday in a doubleheader sweep at Edelen-Haydon Field. In winning 13-0 and 8-1 the Bat Pats took advantage of 12 walks and five hit batters from Eagles’ pitching.

St. Catharine (24-10) had seven hits in the 13-0 win in game one in which they received 10 walks and had four batters hit. Trevor Schneider had two of those hits and five other players had one hit apiece. Adrian Garcia had three RBI’s as did Schneider. Eric Standafer and Jeremy Turpin each knocked in two runs.

Ryan Rizzi (3-2) pitched four innings to pick up the victory. The senior right-hander allowed three hits, walked three and struck out six. Cody Alvey pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit, and Matt Wagner tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning with one strikeout.

Garcia, a junior shortstop from Anaheim, Calif., again provided a big part of the offense in the 8-1 win in game two. Garcia, who reached base seven times in eight at-bats in the two games, had three hits in the nightcap and knocked in three runs. Joey Xavier also had three knocks in the game while Carlos Hernandez, CJ Engelstad and Evan Smith had two hits apiece.

That was more than enough runs for the Patriots who sent four pitchers to the hill. Winning pitcher Trenton Claunch (2-0) worked four innings of two-hit, shutout baseball. CJ Gant, Andrew Nelson and Cory Klinger each pitched one inning in relief. The Eagles’ only run of the day was an unearned one in the fifth inning off Gant.

The Bat Pats will return to Mid-South Conference action Friday when they host the University of Rio Grande. St. Catharine is in fourth place in the MSC with a 5-4 mark. The RedStorm will bring a 19-14 record into the contest and a conference slate of 7-8 which puts them in sixth place. Friday’s single game will begin at 1:00. The three-game series concludes Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
