Bat Pats Split Pair With Cougars

"We didn’t play good baseball.” Such was the summation by head coach Luther Bramblett following his Patriots’ split of a doubleheader Tuesday against visiting Mid-Continent University. St. Catharine took the first game 10-7 but dropped a 12-3 decision in game two.

The Bat Pats (31-14) got 10 hits in the opener, three by KC Mejia and two by Carlos Hernandez, and overcame three fielding errors to hold on for the three-run victory. Jeremy Turpin scored three runs and Eric Standafer had two RBI’s in the win.

Trenton Claunch (3-0) allowed six runs, three earned, and nine hits in five innings to earn the win. The junior right-hander struck out three and walked none. Cody Alvey pitched two innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts.

The Cougars (11-27) plated five runs in the second inning of game two off CJ Gant and coasted to the 12-3 win. After two innings Gant was relieved by Standafer who gave up seven runs, five earned, and 11 hits in four innings. Drew Kissel pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

The Bat Pats had eight hits with Turpin and Brandon Roberts collecting two each. Nick Ernst had two RBI’s.

The Patriots are back at Edelen-Haydon Field for a single game Wednesday against non-conference foe Union College. First pitch is at 3:00.
