Baseball Team Bites Bulldogs 7-4

The Patriot nine took to Edelen-Haydon Field Wednesday to take on a good Union College team. And Luther Bramblett’s Bat Pats came away with a 7-4 win over the Bulldogs.

“They have a good team so it was nice to play well and get back on the winning track,” said Bramblett whose team improved to 32-14 with the victory.

St. Catharine took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed in the game, although the Bulldogs (24-17) tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the third inning. But the Bat Pats took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning when CJ Englestad singled and score on a KC Mejia double. Tyler Mischel’s fourth homer of the year in the fifth frame made the score 5-3.

The Patriots’ sixth run came in unusual fashion in the seventh inning. Carlos Hernandez singled and advanced to second on an Englestad sacrifice bunt. Then, on a deep fly to center by Mejia, Hernandez used his speed to score from second base on the sacrifice fly.

The SC offense had 12 hits with Joel Cooper collecting four of those, all singles. Hernandez and Englestad had two hits apiece.

Ryan Rizzi (5-2) was the winning pitcher, giving up three runs on six hits in five innings. Andrew Nelson tossed two scoreless innings in relief and Cory Klinger allowed one unearned run in pitching the eighth inning. Matt Wagner earned his fourth save of the season as he allowed one hit and struck out two in the ninth inning.

The Bats Pats are back in Mid-South Conference play this weekend with a three game set against visiting University of the Cumberlands. Friday’s single game begins at 3:00 and Saturday’s doubleheader starts at noon.
