Patriots Split DH with Cumberlands

After suffering a shutout Friday in the opener of the three game series against visiting Cumberlands, St. Catharine wasted little time in generating offense in Saturday’s opener with 10 runs in the first two innings. But from there they had to hold on for a 13-10 win in the Mid-South Conference contest.

But the bats fell silent again in game two Saturday as Cumberlands blanked the Bat Pats 6-0. The split left St. Catharine in fifth place in the conference with one more three game series remaining – that coming this weekend at Shawnee State.

Most of the early offense in Saturday’s first game came off the bat of Joey Xavier. The senior first baseman blasted a grand slam in the first inning and added a two-run double in the second frame. But thanks to a porous SC defense that made seven errors, the visiting Patriots were able to mount a comeback.

Starter Dylan Shoffner (6-2) was the unfortunate victim of the poor defense as he allowed eight runs, all unearned, in 5.2 innings of work. He fanned seven and walked three. Matt Wagner picked up his fifth save of the season in tossing the final 3-1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned while striking out three.

Joining Xavier in the offensive explosion were Carlos Hernandez, Tyler Mischel, Adrian Garcia and Joey Andrada who all had two hits. Garcia had two runs scored and drove in two.

The Bat Pats managed just six hits in losing game two on Saturday with Mischel getting two of those knocks. Bruce Tolliver (5-4) allowed all six runs in four innings on the hill. Andrew Nelson pitched three scoreless innings in relief.

St. Catharine will be on the road Tuesday for a doubleheader against Brescia University in Owensboro.
