Patriots Swept at Wise in Softball

The St. Catharine College softball team needed just one win Saturday to secure a spot in this weekend’s Mid-South Conference tournament in Kingsport, Tenn. But, although they came close in game two at UVA-Wise, the Patriots could not get the victory they needed.

The homestanding Cavaliers (28-19, 16-10) posted an 11-2 win in the opener and then squeaked by 2-1 in the nightcap. Those two losses could jeopardize  St. Catharine’s hopes of getting to the post-season unless they were able to get one win on Monday against second place Campbellsville who shut out the Patriots in both games of a doubleheader two weeks ago.

UVA-Wise scored in every inning except the second in the first game that went four and two thirds innings due to the run rule. They scored six runs off starter Ashley Hardin who pitched the first two innings and five runs off Brittany McKee who came in to relieve.

Five different Patriots had one hit each and Brandi Hood and McKee had one RBI apiece.

In the second game Krystal Cammuse pitched six strong innings, allowing just two hits, but the SC defense gave up to unearned runs in the 2-1 loss. St. Catharine (22-28, 9-19) tied the game 1-1 in the fifth inning but the Cavaliers scored the winning run in the sixth when the leadoff batter reached on an error and eventually scored on a RBI ground out.

Hagan Goldey had two of the Patriots’ seven hits and drove in the only run with a double in the fifth inning. St. Catharine had the bases loaded with one out in that inning following Goldey’s double and a Cavaliers’ error but couldn’t bring another run across.
