Patriots Split Weekend in Dearborn Michigan

The St. Catharine Patriots (3-2, 0-0 MSC) made their way to the University of Michigan-Dearborn last weekend where they were able to win 2 of 4.

The Patriots got a slow start in the tournament losing their first 2 matches 1-3 to Lourdes College (2-2) and 2-3 to Grace College (4-0). “We had an opportunity to win almost every game against Lourdes and Grace; we just never could get over the bump” says head coach Jason McDannold. The worst loss suffered by the Patriots came in the fourth game against Lourdes College when they were only able to muster 12 points to lose 25-12 all other games were within 6 points or less. “The Grace game is really upsetting; we had game point and could just not win the fifth set” says McDannold. “Our team has to develop a killer instinct and take the win as opposed to waiting for wins to be handed to us.”

On the second day of the tournament the Patriots were able to turn things around by defeating Spring Arbor University (2-2) by a score of 3-2 and blanking the host Wolves of the University of Michigan-Dearborn (1-7) 3 games to 0. The two wins showcased the talented front row of the Patriots with a significant improvement in attack percentage versus the previous two contests. Against Spring Arbor the Patriots had a 0.244 attack success average and a 0.278 against the University of Michigan-Dearborn, whereas their highest in the first two games was a 0.120 average against Lourdes. Allie Southard and Shauna Stone lead the team with 18 kills each during the two matches while freshman standout Erin Cottrell lead the team in average with a 0.636 against the host Michigan-Dearborn Wolves. “For the most part our blocking has been there (71 blocks over the four contests), but we have to put plays away and finish the set” says McDannold. “These are two good wins for us early in the year, and they will help us prepare for conference quality teams.”

The Patriots will kick off Mid-South Conference play Tuesday night in Lourdes Hall against the Bluefield College Rams (0-0, 0-0 MSC).
