Men's Soccer Hosts NCAA Division 2 Oakland City

The 2013 version of the St. Catharine Men’s Soccer program made their debut Saturday night under the brand new lights against the Mighty Oaks from Oakland City University.

In front of a large home crowd the Patriots were set to showcase a new set of freshmen including Joe Jessop, who hails from Lincolnshire, England. Along with the newcomers the Patriots return six varsity regulars to fill invaluable leadership roles across the field.

The Patriots had the opportunity to showcase their perseverance early when Tyler McKenty (Benton, KY) scored off a Sawyer Abshire (Shelbyville, KY) assist with 29:57 to go in the first half to knot the game up at one. With 9:23 to go in the half the Patriots took the lead on a boot by Marvin Wesselburg (Essen, Germany), and were able to take a 2-2 tie into the second half.

In the second half the Patriots were able to cut the number of corner kicks surrendered from five in the first half to only one for the remainder of the game. With the score 3-2 in favor of the Oaks the Patriots rallied with offense, having many shots missing just wide of the net. “I thought I had it” said Patriot Keeper CJ Powell (Louisville, KY) of the third goal. “I blocked the first shot and the ball rebounded right back to their feet.” Even with the goal the Patriots’ defense and Powell had a successful day, forcing the Oaks to miss 8 of the 11 shots. “When you lose a large group of seniors, you never know what you’re going to get” says Patriots student coach and former player Thomas Paris. “With 6 newcomers all over the field we played well.”

The Patriots will return to action Tuesday, September 3 when they travel to Marian University in Indianapolis to face the Knights (2-1) and will return home to the Barber Soccer Complex September 10 to face the Mid-Continent Cougars (1-3).
