Lady Patriots Look to Ground the Eagles

The St. Catharine Lady Patriots (3-1, 0-0 MSC) came into their game against Asbury University (2-4) riding a three game winning streak, including an impressive victory over Marian University just days before.

During the first six minutes of the contest the Patriots’ offense tested the defensive skills of the Eagles by rattling off four shots in the short period of time. Courtney Anderson (Louisville, Ky.) led the way with three of the four shot attempts, chalking up a total of five on the day. With Anderson’s shots going just wide of the net the Patriots’ were unable to capitalize with a score. After a diving attempt on a ball that pulled Patriot keeper Lindsey Vinson (Dawsonville, Ga.) across the goal went just off her finger tips, the Eagles took the early lead 1-0. However, the Patriot defense did not let up, maintaining the one point deficit to the halfway point of the contest.

In the second half the Patriot keeper kept her poise, racking up five of her nine total saves to keep the Patriots within striking distance. The Patriots’ attack heated up, forcing the Eagle keeper to make diving save after diving save, but it was unable to get a ball through for a point. After a penalty kick for a goal by the Eagles, with 3:23 left in the contest, the Patriots Ciarra Carr (Ashville, Ohio) made an aggressive play on a ball that would have allowed her to break free to the goal, but was call for a foul with just over a minute remaining allowing the Eagles to maintain the lead.

The Patriots will look to right their path once more Thursday at 3 PM when they face the Bears of the University of Pikeville (3-1, 0-0 MSC) in their conference opener at the Barber Soccer Complex.
