Men's Soccer Tries to Beat the Heat and the Cougars

Tuesday the St. Catharine College Patriots looked to defend the Barber Soccer Complex from the Cougars of Mid-Continent University.

The Patriots came into Tuesday’s contest following a battle on the road with Marian University and were excited to have the opportunity to return to their home turf. However, mother-nature decided to make their homecoming uncomfortable by providing high heat and humidity, both of which the Patriots found ways to cope. In fact, it would seem as if the heat only made Patriot keeper Brandon Campbell (Louisville, Ky.) work harder; the Patriots’ sophomore made the most of his start racking up a career high eight saves in his 83 minutes of play. With diving attempt after diving attempt Campbell and his defense kept the Patriots within striking distance. Leading the way for the Patriot back line was the likes of Nicolas Coleman (Louisville, Ky.), who had a spectacular showing; keeping constant pressure on the cougar offense and hindering their ability to find easy shots. As the first 45 was winding down Patriot mid-fielder Marvin Wesselburg (Essen, Germany) powered a tough shot by the Cougar keeper off the toe of teammate Ashley Woods (Manchester, England).

In the second half the Patriots’ offense kept driving the ball in deep, but they were unable to capitalize on opportunities, even with the spectacular effort from mid-fielder Joseph Creg. Creg was able to contribute on several tough shots by the Patriots that were just wide of the goal. With the Patriots continuing to force the issue on offense the Cougars were struggling to keep them off the board. As time ran out Ashley Woods powered a shot that was just saved by the Cougar keeper, giving the Cougars a sigh of relief.

The Patriots will return home once again Thursday, September 12 to face the UPike Bears in their conference opener.
