Battle of the Lady Patriots Goes to St. Catharine

The St. Catharine Lady Patriots (5-1, 2-0 MSC) remained undefeated in the Mid-South Wednesday as they defeated the University of the Cumberland’s (0-5, 0-2 MSC) 2-1.

At the beginning of the season Head Coach Paul Patton expressed a concern about his team’s ability to score and challenged his team to find creative ways to put the ball in the net. Apparently, sophomore Macy Higdon (Elizabethtown, Ky.) heard the challenge loud and clear as she scored two goals in a Patriot’s victory over the University of the Cumberland’s. The first half started slow as both teams played to a stailmate, taking a scoreless tie to halftime. However, the purple Patriots broke the game open early in the second half, punching a laser shot through on the left side. The celebration was short lived after the Cumberland’s Patriots were able to punch a one two move past the diving hands of keeper Lindsey Vinson to tie the game at one.

As the time wound down, with both teams fearing overtime, the Higdon bolt struck again as she booted her third goal of the season in to put St. Catharine on top. With the goal the Pat’s defense came alive allowing few shots in the final minutes of the contest. Sophomore Shelby Rush (LaGrange, Ky.) led the way for the purple Patriots defensively with several forced turnovers, forcing the Cumberland’s to retreat and slow the rush of the St. Catharine strikers.

The St. Catharine Patriots will get a break from conference play Saturday, as they travel to Oakland City University (In.) to face the Mighty Oaks (0-2) at 1 PM CST.
