Women's Soccer Wins Two on the Road

Runs Winning Streak to Four

The Patriot Women's Soccer team went on the road to Oakland City University on Saturday and again to Union College on Tuesday.

The Mighty Oaks of Oakland City have been a tough match-up at their home field as the Patriots need two overtimes to win there in 2011. This match was much the same with the Patriots generally controlling the ball and the Oaks sending long balls over the top of the Patriot defense for their speedy strikers to run on to. The Mighty Oaks scored first with a through ball that was lofted over the head of Patriot Goalkeeper Lindsey Vinson by Carmen Van Winkle. Down a goal, the Patriots would fight back with a goal by Macy Higdon from a Mariah House pass to knot the score at 1 apiece be the half.

In the second half the Patriots struck again off a cross from Ciara Carr that was poked home by a falling Paige Long for a 2-1 lead. However, late in the half the Oaks would tie it on a goal by Allie Schechner. Time ran out with the score still knotted at 2 and the game headed into overtime.

Early in the first overtime period, the Patriot's Chelsey Landrum was fouled in the Oaks penalty area while going up for a header. The resulting foul gave the Patriots a penalty kick. Courtney Hagedorn put the penalty kick in for the winning goal.

Tuesday the Patriots headed to Barbourville to take on the Bulldogs of Union College. The last meeting of these teams ended in a 1-0 victory for Union in a match played at Nelson County High School in 2011 while the Barber Soccer Complex was undergoing renovation.

This match would be a much different affair. The Patriots jumped to the early lead when Shelby Rush picked up a loose ball from a corner kick play and buried a shot in the top corner for a 1-0 lead. The score would remain the same through halftime.

The Patriots came out quickly in the second half as well. Just two minutes in, Chelsey Landrum headed a ball over a defender and Macy Higdon slotted the ball home to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead. The Patriots continued to pressure the Bulldogs and added to the lead again in the 69th minute with a Chelsey Landrum goal from a pass by Courtney Anderson. The Bulldogs would fight back with a flury in the last 10 minutes of the game and were able to cut into the lead with a goal by Kayla Langen. However, that was all the Bulldogs could muster and the match ended in a 3-1 victory for St. Catharine.

The two wins push the Patriots overall record to 7-1 for the season and 2-0 in the Mid-South Conference. The Patriot reserves will be in action at home on Wednesday, September 25th at 2pm agains Lindsey Wilson College. The Varsity returns to action and resumes the Conference slate when they host NAIA #15 Cumberland University at the Barber Soccer complex on Saturday, September 28th at 2:00 PM.
