Volleyball Tames the Red Storm Once More

The St. Catharine Patriots (10-9, 4-4 MSC) were singing sweet home Lourdes Hall on Tuesday night when the Red Storm (1-12, 0-7 MSC) of Rio Grande came to town.

The Patriots were coming off of a stretch of games in which they went 1-4, but game one proved that St. Catharine was alive and well. The Patriots were able to nullify any electric that the Storm planned to produce defeating them in convincing fashion 25-12. Led by the St. Catharine “Stone Wall” of Shauna Stone (Bardstown, Ky.) and Casey Stone (Princeton, Ky.) and their offense halting blocks, the Patriots got out of the gate quickly and never looked back.

After a statement victory in game one the Patriots looked to be in complete control, until the Red Storm were able to get a charge coming back from 10 behind to trail the Patriots 20-19. However, the Shauna Stone came to the rescue once more, producing kill after kill to propel the Patriots to a 25-22 game two victory. Game three produced an uncomfortable feeling for the home team as the struggled to put the Red Storm away. Trailing 21-20 the volleyball Pats took charge once more off of a storm halting kill from Shauna Stone. With the Patriots unable to gain a definite edge the Red Storm tied the game at 24, before multiple Storm errors produced a decisive game three victory 26-24.

Statistically the Patriots were led on offense by Shauna Stone and Allie Southard (Louisville, Ky.) with a combined 15 kills on 56 attempts. Defensively, Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.), Cat Hall (Louisville, Ky.), Shauna Stone, Casey Stone, and Allie Southard put together 7 blocks to keep the Red Storm hitters at bay. Casey Stone contributed from the back row as well with her 10 digs, a season high.

The Patriots will return to action once more in Mid-South Conference action Friday, October 4 at the University of the Cumberland’s (10-5, 4-4 MSC).
