The St. Catharine Tennis Patriots hit the road over the weekend to face Tennessee Wesleyan and Dalton State College in Knoxville, Tenn.

After discovering Knoxville traffic and a grueling van ride, the St. Catharine Patriots felt a bit rusty before their first doubles contest with the Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs. After falling in number one doubles and number three doubles 8-1 each, Andre Jacomini and Felipe Barrientoes played themselves into a tie breaker situation against a heavily favored number two doubles squad from Wesleyan. With the momentum on their side the Patriot duo was able to send home the winning point, snagging the 9-7 victory.

During the number one singles match Andre Jacomini defeated D. Escobola (4-6, 6-4, 10-6) in a thriller; each player displayed why they were the number one on their team, grinding the match out until the very end. Continuing the success for the Patriots at number two singles was Ethan Rowton with his victory over G. Azutgy (6-0, 6-1) and the highlight of the day came from Felipe Barrientoes and his three hour match with a fellow South American “dirt baller” from Chile. The endurance test for the Chilean Patriot came to a pinnacle with multiple 30 ball rallies, all of which the “giant killer” Barrientoes was able to win, sealing the deal 6-4, 6-4. At number four Alec Rowton was never able to gain momentum, losing 6-1, 6-1. Number five singles proved much the same for Tyler Glover as he dropped the match 6-3, 6-1. Rounding out the day at singles for the Patriots was freshman Marshall Berry in his loss 6-0, 6-0. Even with gargantuan victories at one two and three singles the Patriots fell to Tennessee Wesleyan 5-4.

With Friday behind them the Patriots trudged onward to Saturday to face the Roadrunners of Dalton State College. The Patriots started out hot winning two of the three doubles events. The first victory came from the Rowton duo (Ethan and Alec) as they defeated Porov and Hamsby 8-8(7-5). Continuing their winning ways for the Patriots, Felipe Barrientoes and Andre Jaccomini were able to get victory number two for the Patriots 8-8(7-3) over DeSoura and Argnello.

With the Patriots leading the Roadrunners 2-1, the singles players ran into a wall against the heavily favored individuals of Dalton State. Dropping one, two, five, and six singles caused the Patriots to take the second loss on the weekend. “Even with the two team losses, we had some great singles and doubles victories against some very strong teams” said Head Coach Jim Coomer. “Our youth will develop and we will be extremely competitive in our conference.”

The Patriots will travel to Lebanon, Ill. Saturday to take on the Bearcats of McKendree University and the Cardinals of North Central College.
