Men's Soccer Battles the Eagles of Asbury

The St. Catharine Patriots (2-10, 0-5 MSC) made the trip to Lexington on Tuesday to square off against the Asbury University Eagles (6-4, 1-1 KIAC).

Traditionally, the Asbury contest is one that the Patriot soccer players circle on the calendar. With the 2012 contest coming down to the wire, ending 4-3 in favor of the Patriots, St. Catharine was hungry for a win. Without wasting any time the Patriots got on the board first four minutes into the contest with a quick strike off the foot of Sawyer Abshire (Shelbyville, Ky.) from Tyler McKenty (Benton, Ky.) As the first half continued, goal keeper Brandon Campbell (Louisville, Ky.) was making the most of his second varsity start of the season by racking up a career high 11 saves. With the defense keeping things close the Patriots were able to take a 1-1 tie into halftime.

The second half started slow for the Patriots, getting down early off a two assist goal, but they were able to capture the momentum once again when Sawyer Abshire punched home his second goal of the day. Just as the Patriots were beginning to feel the shift in momentum, the Eagles struck for two quick goals, breaking the tie once more. With the temperatures dropping and the Patriots trying to find an answer for the Eagle offense late in the second half, the Patriots never could scoot another one of their five shots on goal into the back of the net.

St. Catharine will hit the road once more as they travel to Bluefield College to battle the Rams in a Mid-South Conference show down. Game time is set for 4 PM.
