Men's Soccer Battle Rams in Overtime Thriller

The St. Catharine Patriots (2-11, 0-6 MSC) took the long trip to Bluefield, Va. to give the Rams of Bluefield College (8-6, 3-3 MSC) all that they could handle.

Scoring in the 2013 season for the St. Catharine Patriots has come at a premium, but on Sunday afternoon the soccer Pats found new ways to find the back of the net. The first half belonged to the keepers, as both teams took a 0-0 tie into halftime. For the Patriots CJ Powell (Louisville, Ky.) had his third game of the season with saves in the double digits (10). However, late in the second half the Rams found ways to score as they took the lead 2-0 at the 69th minute. With the game looking all but over, Jakob Riekert (Nicholasville, Ky.) proved to be the Patriot spark plug as he headed a ball home off of a corner kick from Marvin Wesselburg (Essen, Germany). “He was spectacular” said Head Coach Tim Wolz. “Jakob really earned his keep today with his goal and assist.” It was that assist that powered the Patriots into overtime, as Riekert served a ball from the right side to meet the head of Sawyer Abshire (Shelbyville, Ky.) with only 24 seconds remaining in the contest. For Abshire, the tying goal was his third in three games, and couldn’t have come at a better time.

With the Patriots playing a jumbling the line up with Kevin Owens (Elizabethtown, Ky.) and Jake Jackson (Louisville, Ky.) playing in new positions to help the Patriots battle the Rams to overtime. Jackson was making his first start of the season, and he made the most of it as he helped hold the Rams scoreless through the first seven minutes of the extra period. At the 97th minute the Rams’ James Gunn found the upper 90, just out of the reach of CJ Powell as the Rams took the victory 3-2.

The Patriots will continue their Mid-South Conference run Wednesday when they head to Rio Grande, Ohio to face the #3 Red Storm.
