Cutting Down the Oaks

Looking for a break from conference play the Volleyball Patriots (16-11, 9-6 MSC) welcomed the Might Oaks of Oakland City (13-6) to Lourdes Hall.

In September the Oaks defeated the Patriots on the road in four sets, in what the Patriots considered a disappointing loss. However, with the Oaks coming to Lourdes Hall the Patriot net minders were looking to change the results and avenge their early season loss. Not wasting any time, the Patriots came out the gate quickly, leading by as many as seven points. With Casey Stone (Princeton, Ky.) showing her front row dominance (12 kills overall), the Patriots cruised through set one 25-21. Set two became an even greater show of the Patriots’ improvement from the earlier contest when they shut the Oakland City down winning 24-14.

Leading the Might Oaks 2-0, the match looked to be in hand for the Patriots, but the Oaks had an early answer in set three. Taking an early 7-6 lead, the Oaks were showing their ability to slow a dominate Patriot attack. However, the Patriot front row rose to the occasion with Shauna Stone (Bardstown, Ky.), Allie Southard (Louisville, Ky.) and Cat Hall (Louisville, Ky.) combining for 22 kills on the night. After a pivotal Patriot timeout, Cat Hall kicked the Patriot run off with a kill just inside the antenna that brought the crowd to life. With the Oaks defense unable to respond the Patriots closed the set and match out 26-16.

The Patriots will jump back into conference play Thursday when they travel to Campbellsville to battle the Tigers at 7 PM.
