Men's Soccer Falls In Scrimmage To Ccu

On Saturday, the Men’s Soccer team hosted the Eagles from Cincinnati Christian in an exhibition match. In 2006, Cincinnati Christian finished 21-2-0 and finished Fourth in the National Christian College Athletic Association tournament. Needless to say, this would be a good test for our young Patriot squad.

With the heat from the last 2 week slightly subsided and a 1pm kickoff, the Patriots took the field for the first time this season. Early on the play was pretty even with both teams feeling each other out and trying to get good looks at the other’s goal. Both teams had several chances but the defenses held strong. In the 36th minute of the first half David Barret received a nice cross from Patrick Williams and headed home a goal to put the Patriots up 1-0.

Just over a minute later, the Eagle’s Drew Roberts finished off a shot from inside the box after a hand-ball. There was no call from the referee on the hand-ball, and the goal stood to even the score.

After half-time, the play from both teams got a little sloppy. This could have been the result of mass substitutions from both coaches, or from the heat of the day finally coming upon us. 7 minutes into the second half, CCU broke through for another goal; this one off a corner kick that was volleyed in by Cory Weiss.

The Patriots tried hard to even the score and had an excellent chance with a free kick late in the half. Will Meza took a shot off the pass from Patrick Williams. Unfortunately the shot was barely wide and resulted in an Eagles goal kick. With time running down, both teams continued to attack, but no solid chances came either way. In the end, the result was a 2-1 win for the CCU Eagles.
