Men's Golf is Rising to the Top

After a successful fall season, the St. Catharine men’s golf team is picked sixth in the Mid-South Conference pre-spring polls.

After a 6-13 fall season, the Patriots are excited about their chances in the upcoming spring golf season. “I really like this group of kids” says Head Coach Joan Rizer. “We are really young, but the fall gives us valuable experience in tournament play that we can use to our advantage.” During the fall the Patriots finished an impressive 3-0 against rival Georgetown College, with a 21 stroke advantage over the Tigers. “Georgetown has a great program” says Rizer. “Their coach has done a great job at preparing them and anytime that we are in the same conversation with Georgetown, it’s an honor.”

Not only did the Patriots fair well against the Tigers, but they found two victories against Bluefield College (+71) and one victory in two tries against Shawnee State University (+23). “A lot of our success can be attributed to the increased number of team practices that we have been able to have” says Rizer. “Having Nick Patterson on staff has allowed me to put the team together and build cohesion.” Nick Patterson (Harrodsburg, Ky.) became a student assistant in the beginning of 2013 after he completed his athletic eligibility in the fall of 2013. Nick played under coach Rizer for four years at St. Catharine and is expecting to graduate at the end of the fall semester. In fact, Patterson plans to stay at St. Catharine to continue his education by pursing a Master’s Degree while coaching the Patriots.

The 2014 spring golf season will kick off at the end of February and conclude with the Patriots hosting the Mid-South Conference Golf Tournament at Maywood Golf Course in Bardstown, Ky. in April.
