Men's Basketball Splits Weekend in the Hoosier State

Men’s basketball hit the road Friday, looking for success on their first road trip of the season.

The St. Catharine Patriots (2-1, 0-0 MSC) took their new look team on the road over the weekend to tackle to task of facing #1 Cardinal Stritch (Wisconsin) (2-0). The Patriots came into the contest after an impressive overtime victory against the St. Francis Cougars (Indiana), who just happened to be squaring off against Concordia (Michigan) on the other side of the tournament bracket. Cardinal Stritch was coming off the 2013 NAIA Division 2 National Championship, but the Patriots didn’t fazed by the team from Wisconsin. “It’s just like a normal night for us” said Patriot forward Stephen McCray. “Coach has prepared us for this type of play all preseason.” After a hard fought first half, Julito Hutchinson (Atlanta, Ga.) sunk key throws, sending the Patriots in with a 25-25 tie.

During the second half the Patriots displayed their perseverance, as they stormed back from an 11 point deficit. After a clutch three point field goal from Taron Franklin (Philadelphia, Pa.) with just 10 seconds remaining the Patriots knotted the score at 64. Just seconds later the Patriots took the lead after Omar Skinner (New Castle, Del.) hit the second of two free throws, giving the Patriots a 65-64 lead. However, with only 0.8 seconds remaining, Stritch drilled a three pointer right in front of their bench to take the lead and the 67-65 victory.

With no time to rest, the Patriots jumped back on the floor Saturday to take on Michigan based Concordia (1-2). Led by a 24 point effort from Omar Skinner, the Patriots were able to cruise to a 94-57 victory. The Patriots out-rebounded Concordia 32-26 with 10 of those on the offense side of the ball. William Bailey (Valley, Ala.) grabbed six rebounds while adding 11 points to the Patriots victory effort.

The Patriots will hit the road once more November 18th, to take on Wilberforce College in the “Buckeye State.”
