Women's Basketball Kicks off 2014 at Cumberland University

After a long Christmas Break the St. Catharine Lady Patriots (3-6, 1-2 MSC) were ready hit the hardwood as they hit the road to face the #22 Bulldogs of Cumberland University (7-4, 3-0 MSC).

After a slow start, in which both teams combined for 10 total points in the first five minutes of the contest, the Patriots fell behind by as many as 10 with 15 minutes remaining. However, under the leadership of Machera Calhoun (Fort Meyers, Fla.) and her 13 point effort, the Patriots were able to claw themselves out of the deficit. With just under two minutes remaining in the half, the Patriots went on a 9-0 run capped off by a last second jumper from Cora Moore (Louisville, Ky.) to force a 28-28 tie at the break.

With the momentum in their favor, the Patriots came into the second half with high hopes, but had them dashed quickly as the Bulldogs went on an 11-0 run to kick off the half. With 10 minutes remaining in the contest Lexus Edwards (Lexington, Ky.) took matters into her own hands as she tallied six unanswered points to bring the Patriots within five, forcing the Bulldogs into a timeout. However, the Bulldogs scored immediately following the timeout and never looked back as they pulled away by as many as 15 in the final minutes to win 75-62.

The Patriots will hit the road once more Saturday when they travel to #RV Lindsey Wilson College (11-3, 1-1 MSC).
