Comeback Falls Short as the Patriots Fall 71-68 to the Red Storm

Despite the brilliant effort of William Tolfree (Stone Mountain, Ga.) with 17 point and six rebounds, the St. Catharine Patriots (10-6, 4-3 MSC) couldn’t overcome a late 11-1 run by the Rio Grande Red Storm (12-5, 5-1 MSC) to fall 71-68 on the road.

Even in a contest that saw five lead changes and five ties, the St. Catharine Patriots stayed on the positive end of momentum swing for the majority of the night. Following a tight first half of action the Patriots took a 39-38 advantage to the locker room at half time. However, the start of the second half kicked off an 11-1 one run that reached its pinnacle when Raymon Austin (Cleveland, Ohio) scored two of his 10 points on the night to give the Patriots a 50-39 advantage.  Unfortunately for the Patriots, the Red Storm tore off a run of their own as they went on a 13-2 streak, erasing the Patriot advantage. After trading baskets for the next several minutes, the Red Storm tore off yet another run to take a 64-56 lead with just over two minutes remaining. The Patriots were able to battle back but never overcame the large deficit to eventually drop the contest 71-68.

The Patriots will be on the road again Saturday at Shawnee State for a 4 PM tip off.
