Patriots Down the Bears by way of Comeback

After falling to Rio Grande, the St .Catharine Patriots (11-6, 5-3 MSC) rebounded with a win over their next Ohio foe Shawnee State (8-10, 2-5 MSC) in comeback fashion 68-62.

In their last contest the Patriots had fallen victim to numerous runs in a close contest with rival Rio Grande, but with their backs against the wall in Portsmouth, Ohio the Patriots found a way to survive the Bears. After falling behind early 11-0, Head Coach JT Burton made a complete line up change and looked to the Patriot bench to rally. Fortunately for the Patriots, his decision was the right one; the Patriots score immediately after the mass substitution when Dominique Roy (Penn’s Grove, N.J.) drilled a shot from behind the arc, igniting the Patriot offense. After trading baskets for several minutes, the Patriots would go on a 12-0 run with just eight minutes remaining in the half that was capped off by a blistering three pointer from Omar Skinner (New Castle, Del.), cutting the lead to one. With three minutes remaining in the half William Bailey (Valley, Ala.) slammed home an offense rebound to keep the Patriots within two. However, costly turnovers at the end of the half would force the Patriots to take a five point deficit into the break at 31-26.

The second half would turn the tide for the Patriots as they were able to take the lead with 15 minutes remaining by two, following a steal by Roy that led to a bucket in the paint from Skinner. From there the Patriots and Bears would stay neck and neck until Raymon Austin (Cleveland, Ohio) crammed home two of his 11 on the night to give the Patriots a seven point advantage with 3:45 remaining. Following the Austin basket Omar Skinner would take charge once more, forcing a Bear turnover and going coast to coast for two more of his team leading 20, giving the Patriots a nine point lead with 3:18 to go. With just over 30 seconds remaining the Bears lengthened the game by fouling, but timely free throw shooting from Skinner and William Tolefree (Stone Mountain, Ga.) helped the Patriots seal their 68-62 comeback victory.

The Patriots will hit the road again Thursday to take on arch rival Campbellsville at 8 PM in a battle for Mid-South supremacy.
