Women's Basketball Falls to the Bears on the Road

The Lady Patriots (3-11, 1-7 MSC) couldn’t overcome first half shooting woes to fall to the Shawnee State Bears (9-9, 2-5 MSC) on the road 82-52.

The St. Catharine Lady Patriots would like to forget the first half of Saturday’s contest at Shawnee State as they were only able to muster 16 points on 15% shooting. The Patriots’ struggles started early as the Bears were able to tear off a 16-0 run, taking a 27-6 lead before Stacie Shrout (Florence, Ky.) was able to hit one of her two first half shots from behind the arc with just over six minutes remaining. From there the Patriots were able to find some life, going on a 10-0 run capped off by two hard fought free throws from Sasha Ruiz-Lopez (Fort Meyers, Fla.) for two of her six points. With the run the Patriots were able to slow the Bear attack and cut the lead to 18 at the half.

The Bears set the tempo early in the second half, leading by as many as 35. Even so, Rianne Hofstraat (Netherlands) kept the Patriots’ hopes alive, scoring 13 of her16 points on the afternoon after the break. However, despite the improved 41% shooting in the second half, the Patriots would be unable to slow the scoring of a Bears’ attack that knocked down 59% of their shots en route to an 82-52 victory.

The Patriots will look to rebound Thursday on the road against rival Campbellsville University at 6 PM.
