Baseball Opens 1-3 in Mobile

The St. Catharine College Baseball squad left cold weather for the warmth of southern Alabama to open up the 2014 season.  The Patriots won one of four games, but Bat Pat mentor Luther Bramblett came away pleased with the effort.

"We played well overall, we swung the bats well, made just 3 errors and scored enough runs to win 3 of the 4 games.  Our pitching must get better, that was the only surprising negative from the weekend."

The Patriots lost the opener 8-3, giving up two big innings to the Rams.  John Werner (Anaheim, CA) took the loss, tossing 4 innings and allowing 7 runs (6 earned) on 9 hits.  CJ Gant (Louisville, KY) pitched the final 2 frames, allowing a run on 4 hits.  At the plate, the Pat's tallied 8 knocks, led by Nick Rosso (Santa Barbara, CA) who went 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI's.  Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, CA) added a 2-2 day with a run.

In game 2, the Patriots blew a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning, giving the Rams 4 runs to tie the game on 3 straight walks and a base hit to lose 7-6.  The Patriots answered back with a run the top of the 6th when Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) singled and advanced on a error, stole third and scored on a Rosso ground out. The base on balls continued with five over the next inning and a third and the Pats fall to the Rams 7-6 on a walk of base on balls.

Trenton Claunch (Burgin, KY) took the loss with 1.2 innings of work.  He allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and 5 walks.  He relieved Cory Klinger (Rushsylvania, OH) who tossed 2 thirds and allowed 4 runs on a hit and 3 walks.  Andrew Nelson (Eureka, CA) started and went 4 innings, giving up 1 run on 0 hits.  He did surrender 6 walks.

At the plate, the Pats were led by Dominique Guevara (Oxnard, CA) who went 3-4 with a run and stolen base.  Bohorquez added a 1-3 game with 2 runs and a swipe. Five more Patriots had base knocks.

"The base on balls really hurt us in that second game," noted Bramblett.  "We had the lead twice and couldn't hold it.  We had 14 walks, which is really bad - but we can fix that.  We competed well despite all the free bases."

In game three, the Patriots exploded for 10 runs on 12 hits and had a quality start by Steven Borkowski (San Diego, CA) in a 10-4 Pats win.  Borkowski tossed 6.1 innings and allowed 4 runs on 10 hits.  Alex Knowles (Huntington Beach, CA) pitched the final 2 outs.  Adrian Garcia (Anaheim, CA) led the Bat Pats with a 3-4 game.  He scored 1 and knocked in 3 on a double.  Gonzalez had a 2-4 game with a run and a RBI and Danny Jimenez (Fountain Valley, CA) went 2-4 with a run and a stolen base.  Harold Diaz (Gurabo, PR) had a 2 RBI double and Rosso added 2 runs and a RBI triple.

In the final game of the series, the Pats fell 5-4, despite out hitting the Rams 8 to 3.  Bruce Tolliver (Whittier, CA) started and went 2 innings, allowing 4 runs on 2 hits and 7 walks.  Claunch tossed 4 innings of relief to give the Pats a chance, allowing a run on 1 hit.  Garcia went 2-3 with a run and RBI.  Bohorquez went 1-3 with a run and 2 swipes.  Diaz and Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, IN) both had a base knock and RBI.

"Overall, it was a good weekend.  We competed very well at the plate and in the field.  Our effort and attitude were there all weekend, even losing three games, that says a lot about our character as a club."

The Patriots are scheduled to play at #25 Freed-Hardeman University this weekend.
