Patriots Fend off Blue Raiders Down the Stretch

The St. Catharine Patriots (13-8, 7-5 MSC) rode the hot hands of Omar Skinner (New Castle, Del.) and Nick Porter (Owensboro, Ky.) to defeat the visiting Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders (12-11, 3-8 MSC) on Saturday afternoon.

After having his best defensive effort of the season against the Cumberland Bulldogs in the Patriots’ last contest, Nick Porter continued his career weekend nailing down a career high 18 points along with two steals in the Patriots’ victory over the Blue Raiders. Early in the first half, the Patriots went on a 10-0 run capped off by a Porter trifecta to take a 14-4 advantage. However, the Blue Raiders were not going away quietly as they erased the lead quickly and took a 19-14 lead on the back of a 15-0 run with just over twelve remaining in the first half. The Patriots would battle back when Julito Hutchinson (Atlanta, Ga.) would take a steal down the floor and retake the lead at 24-22 with 10 minutes remaining. With the Patriots and Blue Raiders trading baskets for the remainder of the half, the Patriots were able to take a 52-47 advantage into the break following another Hutchinson lay-up off an Omar Skinner assist.

In the second half, the Blue Raiders would keep the game within a basket before the Patriots tore off a 9-0 run with just over 10 minutes remaining. Following a pair of Lindsey Wilson free throws, William Bailey (Valley, Ala.) would retake the momentum for the Patriots with a dominating slam that would lead to a technical foul for hanging on the rim. Fortunately, the technical did not phase the Mighty Patriots, as they were able to increase their advantage to as many as 18 when Skinner drilled two of his team high 20 points with just over two minutes remaining. In the final minutes, the Patriots would sink crucial shots from the charity stripe to hold on for the 112-103 victory.

With the win the Patriots remain the four spot in the conference standings and will look to improve their standing on Thursday when they travel to rival Georgetown at 8 PM. The Patriots defeated the #18 Tigers in Lourdes Hall 103-90 earlier in the year and will look to earn their first victory against the Tigers on the road.
